Let the learning begin!

RE: AR noob Q&A - SNAFU - 04-03-2015

Can someone learn me on these surplus Colt A1 kits?

Or the most cost effective way to put together an A1 clone?

I would like to ad a A1 style rifle to my collection.

I'd like it to be dependable as an AR can be.....

Seriously though any info on a cost effective build would be great.

I know Olympic makes a clone but they are like 900$ the last time I checked.

Ok, so there's mil-spec, commercial spec, and others like Bushmaster's proprietary barrel nuts. If I'm building a rifle how can I be sure what I'm ordering? Is the difference between mil spec and commercial spec just tolerances or have so called commercial manufacturers made up their own specifications?

I try to stick with mil spec, just so that everything is interchangeable between my rifles. Commercial spec means that company could be using their own specs which may or may not work with anything else.

SNAFU,

Found a kit, you will need to find a barrel and receiver. (that kit is about $40-$50 high IMO).

Green mountain has dirt cheap a1 barrels thoe I've only had and built a few of their 14.5 barrels, they were tits.
I want an A1 in my collection as well but its gotta have a FA and it has to run like a rape victim, I'm just ocd like that.

Eta: that kit would be a good start for an izzy build, fuckin brf....

RE: AR noob Q&A - SNAFU - 04-04-2015

I found a barrel for 150$.

http://www.del-ton.com/Del_Ton_Inc_Barrels_p/bl1027.htm.

Thanks for the link FBHO.

700$ into it and I would still need a lower and parts kit.

That's fucking gay when we gave how many of these to how many countries.....

Every time I start looking into putting this clone together I think, why don't I just go buy an AK....

Don't tell boonie rat, I'm going to go look at an AK this afternoon. I don't know shit about them so I'm sure I will have some questions later.

Chronic akholicism is just as bad as brf!

RE: AR noob Q&A - SNAFU - 04-05-2015

WTF is brf?

Is that some sort of cracker slang???

And don't be telling people about my A1 fetish, I don't need those late night texts from random guys wanting sex.

Is a Romanian Wasr in Ok shape worth the money? Is the Romanian Wasr considered a "good" AK or should I hold out for a better AK?

Do you have ANY intrest in building?

Hell yes, I love assembling AR's!
Then no don't get it, building is waayyhh funner, you get exactly what you want and if you get the tooling not only can you build a collection off 80%s but if you ever feel you built what you wanted you can sell off the tools and make most of your money back. What's your budget for a kit and some tools? Mill lathe or drill press acess? Not nessary but man does it open up your options...

The nitride barrels are the most accuracy you'll get out of a kalash
The kits I've refferanced are best for a beginner because the the barrel has been populated and the head space has been set (barrel pin channel drilled)
Your major opperations will be fitting the rails and extractor with a file, setting the rivets, and pressing in the barrel and barrel pin and installing the trigger guard so your mags don't wobble.....
And I would get a rubbermaid so you don't scratch the finish, I know how you AR guys hate scratches.
Just some food for thought, you can get a lot more into it but that recipe will get you a combat ready kalash that will serve you the rest of your days.
And remember, always have a competent gunsmith check the head space of any new rifle before fireing!!!!........I'm super cereal.....

RE: AR noob Q&A - Gruppenfuhrer - 04-07-2015

Just because someone is a "smith" doesn't mean they can build an AK. There is a lot of certified gunsmiths that can't even assemble an AR correctly let alone an AK. I have warned people before only to watch them send there parts to certain DOOM. Just because you're a gunsmith doesn't mean you can build/assemble everything.

RE: AR noob Q&A - ArRunner5.56 - 01-14-2017

I find that the Magpul Fixed Carbine butt stock gives you better control over the rifle in about any shooting position. I am a 6" 1' big man & with the .80 inch rubber butt stock pad it is at a perfect LOP for me. Also there is no wobble, I also like the look.
