I love Ruger revolvers. They're built like Soviet tanks. I say go for it. Ammo is pricey and a little hard to come by. The Alaskan won't be comfortable to shoot after too many rounds, but it'll pack a punch and draw a crowd when you shoot it.

Couldn't agree more on Ruger.

The OP can shoot other less expensive cartridges in that, from wiki:

"The .45 Schofield and .45 Colt cartridges can fit into the .454's chambers, but not the other way around because of the lengthened case (very similar to the relationship between .38 Special and .357 Magnum cartridges as well as the .44 Special and .44 Magnum cartridges)."
